Parent Education & Resources
At Summit, we want our parents to be involved in their athlete’s journey through the sport of tumbling and cheer. We believe it is important for parents to understand their role in the journey and how they can specifically support their athlete. Whether your child is brand new to classes or a veteran cheerleader, we want parents to have access to the resources we believe are important!
TUMBLING RESOURCES
Supporting your athlete through the journey of learning to tumble can be challenging. We get it! Practices can be challenging, fears can be real but the most important thing is to reach out if you need help or support.
#1 RESOURCE FOR SUMMIT FAMILIES – READ AND UNDERSTAND THE SUMMIT TUMBLING CURRICULUM. We designed this with parents in mind. We want parents to understand what we are teaching and specifically the why. You can find the curriculum under the Resources tab on the website. Login is required.
At Summit we feel that parents are an important part of their athlete’s journey. It can be challenging to know how to support your child along the way. Here are some tips taken from veteran parents and coaches.
#1 – Make sure your athlete understands their self worth is NOT defined by the skills they achieve. Our athletes love the sport and success becomes very important to them. We need to make sure they know their worth is not tied to skills or success. They learn so many lifelong skills through the journey, not specifically the outcome!
#2 – Support don’t pressure. It’s easy to inadvertantly pressure our kids into gaining skills. We know the sport is important to them and we just want to help right? Allow them to talk about their practice but avoid pressuring or putting a timeline on when they will achieve a certain skill. If you have concerns about how your child is progressing, reach out to their coach.
You know the situation – your athlete gets in the car and has a meltdown. Sometimes it was just a stressful practice, or sometimes they are frustrated with a skill they are struggling to perfect.
#1 – Allow them space. Let them know you are there to discuss if they want to talk.
#2 – Give them perspective. We understand the sport is important to them, but it’s not everything. We participate in the sport to learn, build relationships and become better people. Skills aren’t everything!
#3 – Remind them if they are having problems during practices, they can always reach out to a coach. Our staff is here to help!
